Our Standard

Carefully Selected Tutors, Matched With Purpose

Strong subject knowledge

Tutors are chosen for academic background, subject expertise and clear explanations.

Exam-focused teaching

Lessons use specifications, mark schemes and past-paper practice where relevant.

Structured tutor approval

Tutors complete interviews, teaching checks and our internal review process.

Course-specific matching

Students are matched by subject, qualification and exam board.

Lesson Flow

From Confusion To Calm, One Lesson At A Time.

Our tutors cover every compulsory and optional module — building the deep mathematical fluency that university courses demand from Further Maths students.

Step 1

Pinpoint the gaps

We start with recent marks, confidence blockers, and the exact exam board so sessions feel personal from lesson one.

Step 2

Teach the mark scheme

Tutors connect concepts to examiner language, worked examples, and the habits that turn knowledge into marks.

Step 3

Track the lift

Parents see what changed after each session: topics covered, next steps, and the grade trajectory we are building toward.

What we cover

A Syllabus Map Students Can Actually Follow.

Break the specification into manageable topics, then build confidence from the first concept to exam-ready application.

01

Complex Numbers

Cartesian and polar forms, Argand diagrams, De Moivre's theorem, roots of unity, and loci in the complex plane — the topic most students find most unfamiliar.

02

Matrices

Matrix operations, determinants, inverse matrices, linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and solving systems of equations.

03

Further Algebra & Functions

Roots of polynomials, summing series, inequalities, inverse trigonometric functions, and further proof techniques.

04

Further Calculus

Improper integrals, reduction formulae, arc length, surface of revolution, and integration using inverse trigonometric substitutions.

05

Differential Equations

First and second-order ODEs, complementary functions, particular integrals, and modelling with differential equations.

06

Further Vectors

Lines and planes in 3D, scalar and vector products, angles between planes, and intersections — extending A-Level vectors significantly.

07

Optional: Mechanics / Statistics / Discrete

Further Mechanics (momentum, circular motion, elastic strings), Further Statistics (chi-squared tests, continuous distributions), or Decision Maths (algorithms, graph theory) — matched to your exam board's option.

Common Blockers

Where Students Struggle And How We Fix It.

1Complex numbers and Argand diagrams+

Complex numbers feel abstract to most students. We build from the definition of i, through Cartesian form, to polar and exponential form — with Argand diagram sketching at every stage so the algebra has geometric meaning.

2Eigenvalues and eigenvectors+

We teach the method step-by-step: find the characteristic equation, solve for eigenvalues, substitute back to find eigenvectors. Students practise with 2×2 and 3×3 matrices until the process is reliable under exam conditions.

3Second-order differential equations+

ODE solution methods (auxiliary equation, complementary function, particular integral) are mechanical once the structure is clear. We build each component separately before combining them — and practise every variation of the particular integral form.

Family trust

Why Parents Chose Combo.

02

Clear weekly updates

Parents see what was covered, what improved, and what needs attention next, so progress never feels vague.

Structured feedback after every lesson block.

03

A plan built around your child's paper

Sessions are matched to the student's board, tier, topic gaps, and exam timeline instead of generic subject tutoring.

Board-specific support with a measurable target grade path.

What A-Level families say

Focused, one-to-one support that helps students understand difficult topics and prepare with confidence.

Mrs Sophie Anderson, parent

AQA Further Maths · London

★★★★★

“My son found complex numbers completely opaque. After four sessions building from first principles, he could solve Argand diagram problems with confidence. He achieved an A*.”

Kieran M., student

Edexcel Further Maths · Bristol

★★★★★

“ODEs and eigenvalues were the two topics holding me back. The tutor taught both from scratch with a method for every question type. I went from a C to an A.”

Quick questions

FAQs About A Level Further Mathematics

Helpful answers about exam boards, syllabus topics, tutor matching and lesson support.

Do I need to take A-Level Maths to do Further Maths?

Yes — A-Level Further Maths is always taken alongside or after A-Level Maths. Most schools teach both simultaneously over two years. Students who are exceptional at Maths sometimes accelerate A-Level Maths in Year 12 and take Further Maths in Year 13.

Is Further Maths worth taking?

For students aiming to study Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or Computer Science at a top university, Further Maths is effectively expected. Cambridge, Imperial, and many Russell Group courses strongly prefer or require it. Our tutors can advise based on your university targets.

Can you help with STEP, MAT, and university admissions tests?

Yes — we offer specialist preparation for STEP I, II, and III, the Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT), and the TMUA. These tests require a different approach to A-Level exams, and our tutors have extensive experience guiding students through them.

What are the optional modules in Further Maths?

Optional modules vary by board but typically include: Further Statistics (chi-squared tests, continuous distributions), Further Mechanics (circular motion, elastic strings, angular momentum), and Decision/Discrete Mathematics (algorithms, graph theory, linear programming). We cover all of these.
