Assessment Structure

How GCSE Maths is assessed.

AQA 8300, Pearson Edexcel 1MA1 and OCR J560 each use three written papers. The exact paper order and mark totals differ, so revision should follow the student's board rather than a generic GCSE Maths plan.

All three boards assess the same national content areas and use the same assessment-objective framework, but paper order, raw marks and formula presentation differ. Check the linked specification for the current rules.

What we cover

A Syllabus Map Students Can Actually Follow.

Break the specification into manageable topics, then build confidence from the first concept to exam-ready application.

01

Number

Fractions, decimals, percentages, surds, standard form, indices, prime factorisation, HCF and LCM — the non-calculator paper particularly rewards solid number skills.

02

Algebra

Expanding brackets, factorising, solving linear and quadratic equations, simultaneous equations, inequalities, sequences, and algebraic proof.

03

Graphs & Functions

Plotting and interpreting linear, quadratic, cubic, and reciprocal graphs, function notation, transformations, and gradient/area under curves.

04

Ratio, Proportion & Rates

Direct and inverse proportion, ratio problems, percentage change, compound interest, speed/distance/time — frequently tested across all three papers.

05

Geometry & Measures

Angles, polygons, circle theorems, congruence, similarity, area and volume, Pythagoras' theorem, and trigonometry — often worth 30%+ of Higher tier marks.

06

Probability & Statistics

Mean, median, mode, range, frequency tables, cumulative frequency, box plots, histograms, tree diagrams, Venn diagrams, and conditional probability.

Common Blockers

What Is Actually Limiting the Student's Maths Marks? And How We Fix It.

1Higher tier problem-solving questions+

Higher tier papers include multi-step questions where the method is not given. We teach students to recognise problem types, identify the relevant technique, and show working that earns method marks even if the final answer is wrong.

2Non-calculator arithmetic+

Paper 1 is non-calculator and rewards fast, accurate mental and written arithmetic. We practise times tables, long multiplication, dividing decimals, and working with fractions until these are automatic.

3Circle theorems+

Circle theorems are a reliable Higher tier topic. We teach each theorem with its name, diagram, and a proof — then practise applying them in multi-step angle problems where two or three theorems are combined.

4Algebraic proof+

Proof questions reward clear symbolic reasoning rather than a guessed answer. We practise building a logical chain from the given expression so students can explain why a result must be true.

Quick questions

FAQs About GCSE Mathematics

Helpful answers about exam boards, syllabus topics, tutor matching and lesson support.

What is the difference between Foundation and Higher GCSE Maths?

Foundation tier gives access to grades 1–5. Higher tier gives access to grades 4–9. We can help you decide which tier is appropriate and — if you are on Foundation and want to switch — help make that transition as smooth as possible.

Do you cover all three exam boards?

Yes — AQA (8300), Edexcel (1MA1), and OCR (J560). We use your specific exam board's past papers and mark schemes in every session.

How long before the exam should we start tutoring?

Ideally 3–6 months before the exam allows time to cover content gaps and build exam technique. However, we regularly see significant improvements in students who start 6–10 weeks out with intensive focused sessions.

Can you help with the non-calculator paper?

Yes — Paper 1 is a common weak point. We build non-calculator arithmetic skills (fractions, decimals, surds, standard form) and practise the specific Paper 1 question types so students are fully prepared.

What grade do students typically improve by?

Our students improve by an average of 2.0 grades over a full tutoring period. Students who start further below their target and practise consistently between sessions tend to see the biggest improvements.

How much does GCSE Maths tutoring cost?

Rates start from £11 per hour and vary by tutor experience and support level. See the Pricing & packages section above for the current range, then book a free trial to discuss the right plan.

Is GCSE Maths the same as IGCSE Maths?

They cover closely related mathematics, but the specifications and assessment style can differ by board. Compare the international pathway on our IGCSE Mathematics page before choosing a revision plan.

When should we start, and when are the 2026 exams?

Start early enough to close content gaps and practise papers. For context, the 2026 GCSE exam window is 7 May to 23 June, with GCSE results issued on Thursday 20 August 2026; your school and exam board timetable remains the final reference.
