The IB Diploma is the dominant academic currency in Sha Tin. Sha Tin College (ESF) runs IB DP from Year 12, Renaissance College Hong Kong (ESF, Ma On Shan) runs the full PYP–DP continuum, Hong Kong Academy (Sai Kung, commutable on the East Rail Line) is a small IB World School with a 35+ average, and ICS Shek Mun offers IB DP alongside AP. IB DP Biology HL is the standard application subject for CUHK Global Business Studies, HKUST Engineering and the HKSTP-linked science scholarships — competition is brutal in the May session. The Sha Tin gap is rarely content; it is IA structure (the May 15 internal deadline), Extended Essay supervision and Paper 3 timing for HL Physics/Chemistry. We match every Sha Tin DP student to a tutor by school, HL/SL track and target university.
Exam boards we cover
HL Biology is the standard route for Sha Tin College (ESF), Renaissance College Hong Kong (Ma On Shan), Hong Kong Academy (Sai Kung) and ICS Shek Mun students targeting top medicine, engineering or quantitative university courses. Heavier content and a more demanding internal assessment.
SL Biology suits Sha Tin Diploma students keeping a balanced six-subject load. Same internal assessment framework, lighter syllabus depth.
Syllabus coverage
Our IB Biology tutors cover the full specification with extra depth on the topics where Sha Tin students most consistently lose marks.
Cell theory, ultrastructure, membranes and cell division.
DNA replication, transcription, translation and enzymes.
Chromosomes, meiosis, inheritance and genetic modification.
Energy flow, biogeochemical cycles and climate change.
Natural selection, classification and cladistics.
Digestion, circulation, immunity, nerves and hormones.
Investigation design, controlled variables and statistical analysis.
IB Paper 1, 2 and 3 mark-scheme drilling.

What we fix
How we fix it:Sha Tin College (ESF) front-loads IA drafts in Y12 Term 3 and the Extended Essay through Y13 Term 1, with the May 15 IBO submission window non-negotiable. We back-plan Biology sessions from the IBO deadline backwards so Sha Tin College DP students protect Paper 1/2/3 revision in March-April.
How we fix it:International Christian School (ICS) Shek Mun runs AP exams in the standard CollegeBoard May window, which collides with ICS senior internal finals. We run an 8-10 week AP Biology block of FRQ drills and full-paper timing aligned to the ICS calendar.
How we fix it:Sha Tin students applying through JUPAS to CUHK or HKUST need top-band HKDSE or IB grades plus interview readiness in Biology. Our tutors brief Sha Tin candidates on CUHK Engineering/Medicine and HKUST School of Science interview style.
How we fix it:Many Sha Tin parents are HKSTP scientists or CUHK academics who expect HL/A-Level Biology at 7/A*. We run a tight 7-10 day Lunar New Year revision block in late January/early February so Sha Tin students return to school post-CNY with mock-ready Biology.
The current IB Biology course, first examined in 2025, is organised into four themes: unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change. HL adds depth across every theme.
Lessons start from HK$120/hour, and IB tutoring typically runs HK$400-800/hour; we confirm your exact rate in the free trial lesson.
We support IB students at Sha Tin College, Renaissance College in Ma On Shan and other schools across the New Territories, with lessons online in HKT.

Why Combo Tutors
Our top Biology tutors are matched specifically to the Sha Tin College (ESF) IB DP scheme of work — same IA structure, same Paper 3 timing, same Y13 mock cadence. We also support Renaissance College (ESF, Ma On Shan) and Hong Kong Academy DP families on the same model.
For International Christian School (ICS) Shek Mun families running the AP track, we provide CollegeBoard-aligned AP Biology tutors who teach to the exact 2026 FRQ format, plus US application strategy for HKUST-bound and Ivy-bound Sha Tin students.
With CUHK in Ma Liu Shui and HKSTP minutes away, Sha Tin families benchmark Biology against a STEM-elite cohort. Our tutors include CUHK and HKUST alumni and serving examiners — the level Sha Tin parents and HKSTP scientists actually demand.
Mrs Lam Yuk-Mei, parent
IB Biology · Sha Tin College (ESF) · daughter now reading Engineering at CUHK
My daughter went from a 5 in her Y12 mock to a 7 in the May Biology exam. The tutor knew Sha Tin College's IA standards and the CUHK Engineering interview line of questioning.
Mr Daniel Park, parent
IB Biology · International Christian School (ICS) Shek Mun · son now at HKUST
We moved from Seoul to Sha Tin in Y11. ICS Shek Mun's AP pace hit hard, but the Biology FRQ work fixed it before the May papers.
Dr Aditi Kumar, parent (HKSTP scientist)
IB Biology · Renaissance College Hong Kong (ESF, Ma On Shan) · daughter targeting Imperial College
As a HKSTP researcher I had high expectations. The Paper 3 timing and EE supervision on Biology were the level I'd want from a CUHK lab.
Sophie C., Sha Tin College Year 13
IB Biology · Sha Tin College (ESF) · accepted to HKUST Science
The Lunar New Year revision block was the difference. I came back to Sha Tin College in February mock-ready on Biology.
Sarah M.
Parent of IB Student · London
My daughter was struggling with IB Mathematics HL and had almost given up hope of getting a 7. After just two months of weekly sessions with her Combo Tutors tutor, her confidence soared and she went from a predicted 4 to a final grade of 6. The personalised approach made all the difference—her tutor identified exactly where the gaps were and worked through them systematically.
James P.
Parent of A-Level Student · Manchester
My son started tutoring for A-Level Physics about three months before his exams. His tutor was incredibly patient and broke down complex topics like electromagnetic induction into simple, intuitive steps. He ended up getting an A* which we genuinely didn't think was possible. I'd recommend Combo Tutors to any parent who wants a tutor that actually cares about your child's progress.
