Exam boards we cover

Cambridge 0580 and Edexcel 4MA1: how the papers work

Core students sit Papers 1 and 3 and can reach grades C to G. Extended students sit Papers 2 and 4 and can reach A* to E, which makes Extended the usual route to A-Level or IB Maths.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics, Core

0580

Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 3 with one, carrying equal weight. Suits students who need a secure pass.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics, Extended

0580

Paper 2 without a calculator and Paper 4 with one, carrying equal weight. Opens the full grade range.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

4MA1

Foundation and Higher tiers, two papers, with a calculator allowed on both, so revision leans towards multi-step problems.

What we fix

Why the non-calculator paper catches students out

01

Fractions and mixed numbers

How we fix it:Students used to the fraction key rebuild written methods until they are quick and reliable.

02

Surds and indices

How we fix it:We practise simplifying and rationalising by hand, then applying the index laws without checking on a screen.

03

Standard form

How we fix it:Multiplying and dividing in standard form is drilled until the powers of ten stop causing slips.

04

Exact trigonometric values

How we fix it:Students learn the exact values they need and when a question expects them.

IGCSE Maths Core or Extended: Choosing the Right Preparation

The Core or Extended choice shapes everything in IGCSE Maths, and in Muscat it is often made early, sometimes before a student's algebra is ready for Extended questions. We check the tier against current working level in the demo lesson and plan from there. Teaching follows the 0580, 0606 and 4MA1 syllabuses used across the city's international schools, among them Cheltenham Muscat, Muscat International School and British School Muscat. Students join lessons from Qurum, Al Mouj (The Wave), Al Ghubrah, Madinat Sultan Qaboos and Al Khuwair. Tier decisions are often revisited straight after Grade 10 mocks, and a switch at that point is normal, not a setback.

IGCSE Maths before the IB or A-Level: which pathway follows?

The next step depends on the school, so it is worth planning the tier early. The Sultan's School moves from IGCSE to the IB Diploma, while British School Muscat, Cheltenham Muscat and Downe House Muscat move on to A-Level. Students heading for either route usually need Extended.

When the time comes, meet our A-Level Maths tutors in Muscat. Many families also add IGCSE physics tutors in Muscat, since the two subjects share so much algebra.

What Muscat IGCSE Mathematics families say

Dr Sarah Mitchell, parent

Mr Suresh Kumar, parent

Grade 4 → 6
My daughter was struggling with IB Mathematics HL and had almost given up hope of getting a 7. After just two months of weekly sessions with her Combo Tutors tutor, her confidence soared and she went from a predicted 4 to a final grade of 6. The personalised approach made all the difference—her tutor identified exactly where the gaps were and worked through them systematically.

B → A*
My son started tutoring for A-Level Physics about three months before his exams. His tutor was incredibly patient and broke down complex topics like electromagnetic induction into simple, intuitive steps. He ended up getting an A* which we genuinely didn't think was possible. I'd recommend Combo Tutors to any parent who wants a tutor that actually cares about your child's progress.

+2 Grades
We needed help with GCSE Science for my son who found chemistry particularly challenging. His tutor made the sessions engaging and relatable—using real-world examples that finally made reactions and bonding click for him. He improved by two grades and, more importantly, actually enjoys science now.

Common Questions.

Only half of it. Since the 2025 syllabus, Core students sit Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 3 with one; Extended students sit Paper 2 without and Paper 4 with. Each pair carries equal weight, so non-calculator accuracy now decides a large share of the grade.

Extended if they plan A-Level Maths, IB Maths AA or a science-heavy pathway, because Core caps the grade at C. Core suits students who need a secure pass. The tutor reviews recent tests before advising and can prepare for either tier.

Yes. 4MA1 uses Foundation and Higher tiers and allows a calculator on both papers, so revision focuses more on multi-step problems than mental arithmetic. Tell us the board when you book.

Lessons follow the Cambridge 0580 and 0606 and Edexcel 4MA1 syllabuses used across Muscat's international schools, including Cheltenham Muscat, Muscat International School and British School Muscat. What matters for planning is the board and the tier, not the school badge; tell us both at booking and lessons are built around your child's papers.

IGCSE Maths lessons in Muscat start from OMR 5/hr for both Core and Extended; the confirmed rate is agreed in the free demo lesson. The tier does not change the starting rate. Families pay for lessons taken, with the rate fixed before the first paid lesson and no package to buy upfront.
