National 5 to Higher
Higher covers more content in one year, so the step up catches many students out.

Combo Tutors provides online and private tutors for Edinburgh families. Most Edinburgh schools, including George Heriot's, The Edinburgh Academy, George Watson's, Stewart's Melville and St George's, follow the Scottish curriculum: National 5, then Higher, then Advanced Higher. Since 1 February 2026 these are awarded by Qualifications Scotland, which replaced SQA with no change to courses or assessment. Fettes is the only school in Scotland offering both A-Levels and the IB. We match a tutor to the exact qualification and plan lessons around the exam diet.
Exams and routes
Stages vary by school, so ask which year your child sits each level.
| Route | What it involves | Key dates |
|---|---|---|
| National 5 | The main qualification in the senior phase, usually the first set of exams students sit. | Exam diet, late April to June |
| Higher | The main entry qualification for Scottish universities, usually a year after National 5. | Exam diet, late April to June |
| Advanced Higher | Deeper study in a subject, usually in the final year of school. | Exam diet, late April to June |
| Awarding body | Qualifications Scotland replaced SQA on 1 February 2026; courses and assessment did not change. | From 1 Feb 2026 |
| A-Level and IB | Fettes teaches A-Levels and the IB; Merchiston mainly GCSE and A-Level with some Scottish qualifications. | Summer exams |

How lessons work
Lessons are one-to-one and online, so the tutor is matched on subject, exam board and school route rather than on who lives nearby.
Share the school, the exam board or entrance test, the current level and the next deadline.
A 30-minute trial with a matched tutor to check fit and find the first gaps.
The tutor builds a weekly plan back from the exam or test date, using past papers for that board.

IB Mathematics · London
My daughter was struggling with IB Mathematics HL and had almost given up hope of getting a 7. After just two months of weekly sessions with her Combo Tutors tutor, her confidence soared and she went from a predicted 4 to a final grade of 6. The personalised approach made all the difference—her tutor identified exactly where the gaps were and worked through them systematically.

A-Level Physics · Manchester
My son started tutoring for A-Level Physics about three months before his exams. His tutor was incredibly patient and broke down complex topics like electromagnetic induction into simple, intuitive steps. He ended up getting an A* which we genuinely didn't think was possible. I'd recommend Combo Tutors to any parent who wants a tutor that actually cares about your child's progress.

GCSE Science · Birmingham
We needed help with GCSE Science for my son who found chemistry particularly challenging. His tutor made the sessions engaging and relatable—using real-world examples that finally made reactions and bonding click for him. He improved by two grades and, more importantly, actually enjoys science now.
