Why London students

A-Level Computer Science tutoring for London students

Most London sixth forms teach UK A-Levels from AQA, Pearson Edexcel or OCR, while some independent and international schools use Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel International A-Levels. Computer Science papers, practical requirements and mark schemes differ between these specifications, so we confirm the board, specification code and exam year before matching a tutor. Lessons focus on the step up from GCSE, Year 12 assessments, Year 13 mocks and the summer exam series, using past papers for that specification. If GCSE or IGCSE foundations need work first, our IGCSE Computer Science tutors in London can help.

Exam boards we cover

Exam boards we cover for A-Level Computer Science

Each awarding body writes its own specification, so lessons match the syllabus code, assessment objectives, paper structure and grade boundaries your child faces, using that board's past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports.

AQA A-Level Computer Science

7517

Lessons follow this specification's topic order, assessment objectives and paper structure, with past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports. Includes guidance on the NEA programming project, without writing it for the student.

OCR A-Level Computer Science

H446

Lessons follow this specification's topic order, assessment objectives and paper structure, with past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports. Includes guidance on the NEA programming project, without writing it for the student.

Cambridge International or Edexcel International A-Level Computer Science

9618

Used by some independent and international schools. These are different qualifications from UK A-Levels, so we confirm which one your child takes and use matching past papers.

How A-Level Computer Science is assessed

The two main boards assess the same subject in different ways. Lessons are planned around the papers your child will actually sit.

  • AQA 7517 Paper 1 (40%, 2 hours 30, on-screen): programming, data structures, algorithms and theory of computation, answered in an electronic answer document while working on AQA's skeleton program in the IDE.
  • AQA 7517 Paper 2 (40%, 2 hours 30, written): computer systems, architecture, databases, networks and the consequences of uses of computing.
  • AQA 7517 NEA project (20%): a practical project of the student's choice, marked on analysis, design, the technical solution, testing and evaluation.
  • OCR H446 Paper 1, Computer systems (40%, 2 hours 30): architecture, software, data types and structures, and legal and ethical issues.
  • OCR H446 Paper 2, Algorithms and programming (40%, 2 hours 30): computational thinking, problem solving and algorithm design, including a long level-of-response question.
  • OCR H446 Programming project (20%): the student designs, develops, tests and evaluates a coded solution to a real problem.

Syllabus coverage

A-Level Computer Science topics covered for London students

Our A-Level Computer Science tutors cover the full specification with extra depth on the topics where London students most consistently lose marks.

Data structures

Arrays, linked lists, stacks, queues, trees and hash tables.

Algorithms & complexity

Big-O, sorting, searching and graph algorithms.

Programming paradigms

Procedural, object-oriented and functional programming.

Computer architecture

CPU, assembly, addressing modes and pipelining.

Operating systems & networks

Scheduling, memory management, TCP/IP and security.

Databases & SQL

Normalisation, joins, transactions and ACID.

Theory of computation

Finite state machines, regular expressions and Turing machines.

NEA / project guidance

Specification, design, testing and evaluation writeups.

NEA and programming project support

The project is worth 20% of the final grade on both boards, and working code alone will not earn it. On AQA the technical solution carries the largest share, but analysis, design, testing and evaluation together still make up 33 of the 75 marks.

  • We help students scope a problem that is complex enough to score, then plan the analysis, design, development, testing and evaluation sections from the start of Year 13. Strong projects often start in the summer of Year 12.
  • Tutors teach the skills and give feedback on the approach; the work stays the student's own, as the boards require.
  • Regular short milestones replace the usual January panic: working prototype first, then testing evidence, then the evaluation write-up.

Paper 1 is sat on screen, so we practise on screen

AQA releases preliminary material and a skeleton program before the exam, and students who have only revised theory meet both for the first time in the exam hall.

  • Lessons include timed work on the skeleton program in the same style: extending code, writing routines from a specification, and answering the theory questions the program raises.
  • Python is a common choice. AQA also examines in other languages, including C#, Java and VB.NET, and OCR projects can use any suitable language, so we match the tutor to the language your child's school teaches.

What we fix

Where London A-Level Computer Science students lose marks

01

Pseudocode and trace tables under time pressure

How we fix it:Students can code but lose marks translating logic into exam pseudocode and dry-running algorithms. We drill both with past-paper questions and mark schemes.

02

Meeting the skeleton program for the first time in the exam

How we fix it:Paper 1 rewards students who have already extended and debugged the skeleton code in practice, so we build that into lessons before the exam.

03

NEA write-up left until the end

How we fix it:Code without analysis, testing evidence and evaluation gives away marks that are hard to recover late. Milestones from the autumn term fix this.

04

Vague theory answers

How we fix it:Extended theory questions need developed points, not definitions. We teach the structure mark schemes reward, using examiner reports.

What UK families say

Sarah M.

IB Mathematics · London

My daughter was struggling with IB Mathematics HL and had almost given up hope of getting a 7. After just two months of weekly sessions with her Combo Tutors tutor, her confidence soared and she went from a predicted 4 to a final grade of 6. The personalised approach made all the difference—her tutor identified exactly where the gaps were and worked through them systematically.

James P.

A-Level Physics · Manchester

My son started tutoring for A-Level Physics about three months before his exams. His tutor was incredibly patient and broke down complex topics like electromagnetic induction into simple, intuitive steps. He ended up getting an A* which we genuinely didn't think was possible. I'd recommend Combo Tutors to any parent who wants a tutor that actually cares about your child's progress.

Priya K.

GCSE Science · Birmingham

We needed help with GCSE Science for my son who found chemistry particularly challenging. His tutor made the sessions engaging and relatable—using real-world examples that finally made reactions and bonding click for him. He improved by two grades and, more importantly, actually enjoys science now.

+150 Points
I used Combo Tutors to prepare for the Digital SAT. My tutor helped me develop a study plan, learn time-management techniques, and practise with realistic mock tests. My score jumped by 150 points between my diagnostic and actual exam. The Digital SAT-specific tips were especially valuable since the format was new to me.

B → A*
Finding a tutor who understood the Cambridge IGCSE syllabus was a challenge until we found Combo Tutors. Our daughter's English tutor was exceptional—she improved her essay structure, analytical writing, and comprehension skills significantly. She achieved an A* and is now much more confident heading into her A-Level studies.

Oliver R.

AP Student · San Francisco

3 → 5
I was really anxious about AP Chemistry because our school teacher moved through the material so fast. My Combo Tutors tutor helped me revisit topics at my own pace, work through past free-response questions, and build a solid revision strategy. I scored a 5 on the exam and feel well-prepared for university chemistry. Couldn't have done it without them.

All lessons are online and one-to-one in UK time. That lets us match a specialist for the exact specification, wherever your family is in London.

No. Combo Tutors is an independent tutoring provider with no affiliation to any London school. We don't assume a board from the school's name, so please share the subject specification.

Yes. A tutor reviews recent tests, targets the weakest topics and practises exam-style questions with mark-scheme feedback. How much support is needed depends on the starting point.

Yes, within the boards' rules. A tutor can teach the skills, help scope the problem, give feedback on the approach and keep the project on schedule. The analysis, code and write-up must be the student's own work, and any help received should be declared to the school.

Python is a common choice. AQA also examines in other languages, including C#, Java and VB.NET, and OCR projects can be written in any suitable language. Tell us your child's school language and we match the tutor to it.

Paper 1 is sat on screen. Students work on a skeleton program in an IDE and answer questions in an electronic document. We practise with the released preliminary material and skeleton code so the format is familiar before the exam.

Yes. We cover AQA 7516 and OCR H046 AS courses, and students who continue to the full A-Level with the same board keep the same tutor where possible.
