Why London students

Which A-Level Maths board does your child study?

London schools use different awarding bodies: Pearson Edexcel 9MA0, AQA 7357, OCR H240 and OCR MEI H640, each covering Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics with its own papers. Some international schools use Pearson Edexcel International A-Level or Cambridge International 9709 instead, which are different qualifications from UK 9MA0. We confirm the qualification and exam year before choosing past papers. Further Mathematics is a separate A-Level with extra content and optional modules, so it needs a specialist tutor. If algebra from GCSE or IGCSE is the weak spot, our IGCSE Maths tutors in London can rebuild it first.

What we fix

Why the jump from GCSE to A-Level Maths is hard

01

Algebra underpins everything

Weak fractions, indices or rearranging cause errors across topics.

How tutoring helps:Strengthen manipulation of expressions, equations and functions.

02

Calculus needs understanding

Students memorise rules but can't apply them to graphs or rates of change.

How tutoring helps:Connect differentiation and integration to what they mean.

03

Harder trigonometry

Identities and equations go well beyond basic ratios.

How tutoring helps:Show how the relationships connect, then practise solving.

04

Mechanics and Statistics

Unfamiliar applied contexts need modelling, not recall.

How tutoring helps:Build the model, solve it and check the answer makes sense.

Worked example: finding a stationary point

For f(x) = x² − 6x + 5, differentiate to get f′(x) = 2x − 6. At a stationary point 2x − 6 = 0, so x = 3, and f(3) = 9 − 18 + 5 = −4. The stationary point is (3, −4). A tutor then asks what kind of point it is and how it shows on the graph.

Applying for maths-heavy courses? Some universities ask for TMUA, STEP or MAT; requirements vary by course and year, so check the university's admissions page, and ask us about specialist preparation. Weighing up the IB instead? See our IB Maths tutors in London.

A-Level Maths revision from Year 12 to Year 13

A plan that adapts to the student's progress and exam timetable:

  • Year 12 autumn: confidence with algebra, functions and new concepts.
  • Year 12 spring and summer: use internal exams to find topics to revisit.
  • Year 13 autumn: consolidate Year 12 while keeping pace with new content.
  • Year 13 January–March: mock results guide a structured revision plan.
  • Easter to the exams: timed past papers and mark-scheme review.

Our online tutors in London page covers every other subject and curriculum.

What UK families say

Sarah M.

IB Mathematics · London

My daughter was struggling with IB Mathematics HL and had almost given up hope of getting a 7. After just two months of weekly sessions with her Combo Tutors tutor, her confidence soared and she went from a predicted 4 to a final grade of 6. The personalised approach made all the difference—her tutor identified exactly where the gaps were and worked through them systematically.

James P.

A-Level Physics · Manchester

My son started tutoring for A-Level Physics about three months before his exams. His tutor was incredibly patient and broke down complex topics like electromagnetic induction into simple, intuitive steps. He ended up getting an A* which we genuinely didn't think was possible. I'd recommend Combo Tutors to any parent who wants a tutor that actually cares about your child's progress.

Priya K.

GCSE Science · Birmingham

We needed help with GCSE Science for my son who found chemistry particularly challenging. His tutor made the sessions engaging and relatable—using real-world examples that finally made reactions and bonding click for him. He improved by two grades and, more importantly, actually enjoys science now.

+150 Points
I used Combo Tutors to prepare for the Digital SAT. My tutor helped me develop a study plan, learn time-management techniques, and practise with realistic mock tests. My score jumped by 150 points between my diagnostic and actual exam. The Digital SAT-specific tips were especially valuable since the format was new to me.

B → A*
Finding a tutor who understood the Cambridge IGCSE syllabus was a challenge until we found Combo Tutors. Our daughter's English tutor was exceptional—she improved her essay structure, analytical writing, and comprehension skills significantly. She achieved an A* and is now much more confident heading into her A-Level studies.

AP Student · San Francisco

3 → 5
I was really anxious about AP Chemistry because our school teacher moved through the material so fast. My Combo Tutors tutor helped me revisit topics at my own pace, work through past free-response questions, and build a solid revision strategy. I scored a 5 on the exam and feel well-prepared for university chemistry. Couldn't have done it without them.
