Why London students

IB Economics tutoring for London students

A smaller group of London students follow the IB Diploma Programme at IB World Schools and international schools. IB Economics is taught at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL), with external papers and an Internal Assessment (IA) that must remain the student's own work. Tutors explain concepts and assessment criteria, practise exam-style questions and help students plan around IA, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge deadlines. We confirm HL or SL and the current subject guide before matching. Comparing routes? See our A-Level Economics tutors in London.

Exam boards we cover

Exam boards we cover for IB Economics

Each awarding body writes its own specification, so lessons match the syllabus code, assessment objectives, paper structure and grade boundaries your child faces, using that board's past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports.

IB Diploma Economics — Higher Level

Deeper content and longer papers, often expected for competitive university courses. Tutors follow the current IB subject guide, practise past-paper questions with markschemes and explain the Internal Assessment criteria.

IB Diploma Economics — Standard Level

Secure understanding across the core syllabus, with paper practice, IB command terms and guidance on the Internal Assessment, which stays the student's own work.

Syllabus coverage

IB Economics topics covered for London students

Our IB Economics tutors cover the full specification with extra depth on the topics where London students most consistently lose marks.

Microeconomics

Demand, supply, elasticity and market failure.

Macroeconomics

GDP, inflation, unemployment and economic growth.

International economics

Trade, exchange rates and balance of payments.

Development economics

Growth, poverty and sustainability.

Economic policy

Fiscal, monetary and supply-side policy.

HL extension topics

Theory of the firm, Lorenz curve and Gini coefficient.

Internal Assessment portfolio

Three commentaries on real-world news articles.

Past-paper exam technique

IB Paper 1, 2 and 3 mark-scheme drilling.

How IB Economics is assessed

HL students sit three papers and SL students sit two, and both levels complete the Internal Assessment.

  • SL: Paper 1 (30%, extended response), Paper 2 (40%, data response), Internal Assessment (30%).
  • HL: Paper 1 (20%), Paper 2 (30%), Paper 3 (30%, policy questions with calculations), Internal Assessment (20%).
  • The IA is three commentaries, each based on a news article from a different unit of the course, up to 800 words, and built around a different key concept.

Internal Assessment commentaries, planned properly

Each commentary depends heavily on the article choice and the key concept, so we treat both as taught steps.

  • Tutors help students pick articles, plan the diagram and chain of analysis, and give feedback on drafts against the IA criteria. The commentary stays the student's own work, as the IB requires.
  • We plan the three commentaries across both years, so the third is not written the week before the deadline alongside the Extended Essay.

What we fix

Where London IB Economics students lose marks

01

Diagrams drawn but not explained

How we fix it:An unlabelled or unexplained diagram earns little. In lessons, every diagram is drawn, labelled and talked through as one routine.

02

Evaluation left as a final sentence

How we fix it:Paper 1 part (b) and Paper 2 reward built-in evaluation: stakeholders, time frames and assumptions. We teach students to evaluate inside the answer, not after it.

03

HL Paper 3 calculations rushed

How we fix it:Policy questions mix calculations with recommendations. We practise the calculation set (elasticities, tax and subsidy incidence, exchange rates, national income) under time.

04

IA articles chosen in a panic

How we fix it:Weak articles cap the commentary before writing starts, so article choice is taught and done early.

What UK families say

Sarah M.

IB Mathematics · London

My daughter was struggling with IB Mathematics HL and had almost given up hope of getting a 7. After just two months of weekly sessions with her Combo Tutors tutor, her confidence soared and she went from a predicted 4 to a final grade of 6. The personalised approach made all the difference—her tutor identified exactly where the gaps were and worked through them systematically.

James P.

A-Level Physics · Manchester

My son started tutoring for A-Level Physics about three months before his exams. His tutor was incredibly patient and broke down complex topics like electromagnetic induction into simple, intuitive steps. He ended up getting an A* which we genuinely didn't think was possible. I'd recommend Combo Tutors to any parent who wants a tutor that actually cares about your child's progress.

Priya K.

GCSE Science · Birmingham

We needed help with GCSE Science for my son who found chemistry particularly challenging. His tutor made the sessions engaging and relatable—using real-world examples that finally made reactions and bonding click for him. He improved by two grades and, more importantly, actually enjoys science now.

+150 Points
I used Combo Tutors to prepare for the Digital SAT. My tutor helped me develop a study plan, learn time-management techniques, and practise with realistic mock tests. My score jumped by 150 points between my diagnostic and actual exam. The Digital SAT-specific tips were especially valuable since the format was new to me.

B → A*
Finding a tutor who understood the Cambridge IGCSE syllabus was a challenge until we found Combo Tutors. Our daughter's English tutor was exceptional—she improved her essay structure, analytical writing, and comprehension skills significantly. She achieved an A* and is now much more confident heading into her A-Level studies.

Oliver R.

AP Student · San Francisco

3 → 5
I was really anxious about AP Chemistry because our school teacher moved through the material so fast. My Combo Tutors tutor helped me revisit topics at my own pace, work through past free-response questions, and build a solid revision strategy. I scored a 5 on the exam and feel well-prepared for university chemistry. Couldn't have done it without them.

Yes, within IB rules: choosing articles, planning around a key concept, learning the criteria and receiving feedback on drafts. The writing and analysis must be the student's own, and that is how we work.

SL students sit Papers 1 and 2. HL students also sit Paper 3, which mixes calculations with policy recommendations, and HL includes extension topics such as theory of the firm. We confirm your child's level and school deadlines before matching.

Yes: question choice, structure and research habits. As with the IA, the work remains the student's own.
