Why London students

IB Maths AA vs AI: which course does your child study?

AA emphasises mathematical reasoning, algebraic techniques and proof; AI emphasises modelling, statistics and technology. Each runs at Higher Level, with more content and an extra Paper 3, or Standard Level. A student taking AA HL needs a different plan from one taking AI SL, so we confirm the course and level and use the current IB subject guide. Tutors can explain the Internal Assessment criteria but never write or create assessed work for the student. Needing the maths for a science too? See our IB Physics tutors in London.

Exam boards we cover

Exam boards we cover for IB Maths

Each awarding body writes its own specification, so lessons match the syllabus code, assessment objectives, paper structure and grade boundaries your child faces, using that board's past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports.

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

AA HL / SL

Algebra, functions, calculus, trigonometry and proof; calculator use differs by paper.

IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

AI HL / SL

Modelling, statistics and technology, with interpretation of results in context.

What we fix

Where IB Maths students commonly lose marks

01

AA: algebra and reasoning

Unfamiliar questions combine several techniques.

How tutoring helps:Develop functions, calculus, trigonometry and clear mathematical argument.

02

AI: modelling and interpretation

Students get calculator output but can't explain what it means.

How tutoring helps:Practise modelling decisions and checking answers make sense in context.

03

HL: multistep problems

Paper 3 style questions need techniques combined confidently.

How tutoring helps:Work through extended, unfamiliar problems step by step.

04

Showing reasoning

A correct number without clear working loses marks.

How tutoring helps:Write working examiners can follow.

The IB Maths Internal Assessment, done responsibly

The IA is an individual mathematical exploration: choose a manageable topic, investigate it, communicate the reasoning and reflect on the results. A tutor can help the student understand:

  • the assessment criteria and mathematical communication
  • appropriate use of techniques, and analysis rather than description
  • meaningful reflection, academic integrity and correct attribution

Tutors must not write the exploration or create assessed work. Comparing the IB with A-Levels? See our A-Level Maths tutors in London, or our IB Economics tutors in London for another quantitative subject.

What UK families say

Sarah M.

IB Mathematics · London

My daughter was struggling with IB Mathematics HL and had almost given up hope of getting a 7. After just two months of weekly sessions with her Combo Tutors tutor, her confidence soared and she went from a predicted 4 to a final grade of 6. The personalised approach made all the difference—her tutor identified exactly where the gaps were and worked through them systematically.

James P.

A-Level Physics · Manchester

My son started tutoring for A-Level Physics about three months before his exams. His tutor was incredibly patient and broke down complex topics like electromagnetic induction into simple, intuitive steps. He ended up getting an A* which we genuinely didn't think was possible. I'd recommend Combo Tutors to any parent who wants a tutor that actually cares about your child's progress.

Priya K.

GCSE Science · Birmingham

We needed help with GCSE Science for my son who found chemistry particularly challenging. His tutor made the sessions engaging and relatable—using real-world examples that finally made reactions and bonding click for him. He improved by two grades and, more importantly, actually enjoys science now.

SAT Prep Student · Boston

+150 Points
I used Combo Tutors to prepare for the Digital SAT. My tutor helped me develop a study plan, learn time-management techniques, and practise with realistic mock tests. My score jumped by 150 points between my diagnostic and actual exam. The Digital SAT-specific tips were especially valuable since the format was new to me.

Amira H.

Parent of IGCSE Student · Dubai

B → A*
Finding a tutor who understood the Cambridge IGCSE syllabus was a challenge until we found Combo Tutors. Our daughter's English tutor was exceptional—she improved her essay structure, analytical writing, and comprehension skills significantly. She achieved an A* and is now much more confident heading into her A-Level studies.

Oliver R.

AP Student · San Francisco

3 → 5
I was really anxious about AP Chemistry because our school teacher moved through the material so fast. My Combo Tutors tutor helped me revisit topics at my own pace, work through past free-response questions, and build a solid revision strategy. I scored a 5 on the exam and feel well-prepared for university chemistry. Couldn't have done it without them.
