Why London students

Cambridge 0580 or Edexcel 4MA1: which course is your child taking?

IGCSE Maths is not one identical exam across every London school. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 has Core and Extended routes; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1 has Foundation and Higher tiers. Their specifications, papers and mark schemes differ, so we confirm the qualification code, route or tier and exam year before the first lesson. Students sitting Cambridge in 2026 or 2027 should use the 2025–2027 syllabus, where Paper 1 (Core) and Paper 2 (Extended) are the non-calculator papers. Taking Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 or Edexcel Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1 as well? Those are separate qualifications and need a specialist. Progressing to sixth form? Exam boards we cover

Exam boards we cover for IGCSE Maths

Each awarding body writes its own specification, so lessons match the syllabus code, assessment objectives, paper structure and grade boundaries your child faces, using that board's past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics

0580

Core or Extended. Under the 2025–2027 syllabus, Papers 1 and 2 are non-calculator and Papers 3 and 4 allow a calculator.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

4MA1

Foundation or Higher tier, each with two papers. Practice must come from Edexcel's own past papers.

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics

0606

An advanced qualification taken alongside 0580 by some students; we match a specialist.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Further Pure Mathematics

4PM1

Edexcel's advanced option, not interchangeable with 4MA1.

What we fix

Where students lose marks in IGCSE Maths

01

Algebraic fractions and rearranging formulae

Students know individual rules but slip when a question needs several steps.

How tutoring helps:Practise common denominators, factorising and keeping equations balanced until multi-step questions feel routine.

02

Circle theorems and geometric reasoning

Recognising a theorem isn't enough; the answer has to say why.

How tutoring helps:Train students to state each reason and show the steps the mark scheme rewards.

03

Surds and exact answers

Writing a rounded decimal when the question asks for an exact value loses the mark.

How tutoring helps:Work through exact forms, for example √72 = √(36 × 2) = 6√2, until they are automatic.

04

Choosing a method in mixed papers

Chapter exercises give away the method; mixed past-paper questions don't.

How tutoring helps:Move from guided examples to independent mixed-topic practice on the right board's papers.

When should a Year 11 student start IGCSE Maths revision?

Start by identifying weak topics rather than sitting full papers straight away. A useful outline for the summer series:

  • September–November: review fundamentals and school assessments.
  • December–January: analyse mock results and recurring errors.
  • February–March: mixed-topic practice on weaker areas.
  • April–May: timed, current-format papers with mark-scheme review.

Adapt it to your child's exam series and progress. Struggling with calculations in Physics too? Our IGCSE Physics tutors in London link the Maths to the science, and our online tutors in London page covers every subject.

What UK families say

Sarah M.

IB Mathematics · London

My daughter was struggling with IB Mathematics HL and had almost given up hope of getting a 7. After just two months of weekly sessions with her Combo Tutors tutor, her confidence soared and she went from a predicted 4 to a final grade of 6. The personalised approach made all the difference—her tutor identified exactly where the gaps were and worked through them systematically.

James P.

A-Level Physics · Manchester

My son started tutoring for A-Level Physics about three months before his exams. His tutor was incredibly patient and broke down complex topics like electromagnetic induction into simple, intuitive steps. He ended up getting an A* which we genuinely didn't think was possible. I'd recommend Combo Tutors to any parent who wants a tutor that actually cares about your child's progress.

Priya K.

GCSE Science · Birmingham

We needed help with GCSE Science for my son who found chemistry particularly challenging. His tutor made the sessions engaging and relatable—using real-world examples that finally made reactions and bonding click for him. He improved by two grades and, more importantly, actually enjoys science now.

+150 Points
I used Combo Tutors to prepare for the Digital SAT. My tutor helped me develop a study plan, learn time-management techniques, and practise with realistic mock tests. My score jumped by 150 points between my diagnostic and actual exam. The Digital SAT-specific tips were especially valuable since the format was new to me.

B → A*
Finding a tutor who understood the Cambridge IGCSE syllabus was a challenge until we found Combo Tutors. Our daughter's English tutor was exceptional—she improved her essay structure, analytical writing, and comprehension skills significantly. She achieved an A* and is now much more confident heading into her A-Level studies.

AP Student · San Francisco

3 → 5
I was really anxious about AP Chemistry because our school teacher moved through the material so fast. My Combo Tutors tutor helped me revisit topics at my own pace, work through past free-response questions, and build a solid revision strategy. I scored a 5 on the exam and feel well-prepared for university chemistry. Couldn't have done it without them.
